How can we talk about inequalities with children?
How can we do so without oversimplifying, yet still remain understandable?
What tools do we have — and, most importantly, how can we use them?
The Zoom Out Handbook was created to answer these questions.

Written by experts and professionals involved in the Zoom Out project, and developed through exchanges with teachers and students during workshops, this is both a theoretical and practical guide — soon to be accompanied by a Toolbox — designed for anyone who works with or supports children in their growth.
Its goal is to offer an intersectional perspective on children’s literature, helping readers acquire or strengthen their understanding of the topic.

The Handbook aims to highlight the richness of European children’s literature as a source of critical thinking about inequalities, both inside and outside the classroom, through an intersectional approach. It also shares innovative methodological approaches to develop engaging educational practices through literature.

This handbook provides a solid theoretical foundation to:

  • Guide questioning rather than offer ready-made answers
  • Present methods for addressing inequalities through books
  • Help children develop their own critical thinking

The Handbook is a free resource made available by the Zoom Out project.
Download it and use it however you like — to prepare a lesson, to choose a picture book more consciously, or simply to look at stories with new eyes, together with the young people growing up by your side.
