School: Launch of the Zoom Out Awareness Campaign — Children’s Literature Through an Intersectional Lens

ZoomOut Poster ENG

Deconstructing stereotypes and fighting discrimination through children’s literature — this is the goal of the awareness campaign launched by the Zoom Out project.

“Books are seeds that create new worlds and challenge prejudice” is the campaign’s main slogan, which highlights key axes of discrimination: racism, sexism, classism, body shaming, and ableism.

Children’s literature presents the world through the experiences of characters with very different roles and traits. In this way, readers come to understand that there isn’t just one way of being, and that everyone can find their own unique path.

An intersectional perspective allows us to interpret reality by considering how the different aspects of a person’s identity — gender, race or ethnicity, class, and disability — intersect and shape their experiences of privilege or discrimination.

The illustrations, created by artist Cristina Zafra, are available to download freely and without restrictions. They are designed to be printed in A2 format and displayed on walls at home, in classrooms, libraries, or bookstores.

They are available in Italian, English, Catalan, Spanish, Polish, and Croatian — the languages of the ten project partners.

Cristina Zafra’s characters play and interact with one another, bringing to life a world where every person is unique thanks to their personal characteristics.

Zoom Out is an Erasmus+ project funded by the European Union, involving primary schools, teachers, and students, with the goal of creating educational resources that can be used in the classroom. It is aimed at primary school teachers, librarians, booksellers, and anyone working in the field of children’s literature.
The project brings together ten partners, including schools and organizations, from four European countries: Italy, Spain, Croatia, and Poland.
